National Aquarium Baltimore, MD

The National Aquarium features 16,000 creatures that make their homes not just in, but also around the water. There are amphibians including the American bullfrog and blue poison dart frog, and birds including the hyacinth macaw, scarlet ibis and yellow-headed Amazon parrot. Spectacular fish include the electric eel, porcupinefish, graysby and zebra shark, while invertebrates include the chambered nautilus, Giant Pacific octopus, and tarantula. You can also see dolphins, crocodiles, turtles, snakes and tamarins.

There are a number of exhibitions taking place in the aquarium at present. They include Jellies Invasion, which features nine stunning species of jellyfish. Shark Alley is a 225,000-gallon habitat created for these predators.
Australia: Wild Extremes takes you inside a northern Australian river gorge and features 1,800 individual native animals from 120 species, including freshwater crocodiles, turtles, fishes, snakes, lizards, free-flying birds, and flying foxes.

You can also see some of the local wildlife, in the Maryland: Mountains to the Sea exhibition. Bullfrogs, diamondback terrapins, and striped bass are some of the animals on display that can be found within the state of Maryland.

One of the aquarium’s latest attractions is The Great Salmon Run, a 4D adventure that follows the Pacific salmon on its annual journey upstream as they negotiate rapids and waterfalls, as well as bears, orcas and sea lions. It features high definition 3D footage plus in-theatre special effects.

The aquarium has a second site, in Washington, DC, which holds a further 1,500 animals.
