Oxford Street, at a busy junction

For all those who visit London for the first time, it may come to be a big surprise that London has in its heart a shopping heaven, the world famous Oxford Street. Once you have visited here, you will never like to miss the opportunity to be there again and again, rather every time whenever you will visit London, in your life.

Extending from the Marble Arch near the north-east corner of the Hyde Park to the St Giles’ Circus, close to the intersection with Charing Cross Road and Tottenham Court Road, this a mile and a half stretch of shopper’s paradise, offers a variety and richness, not found anywhere else.

Although the Oxford Street has plenty of stores covering all human needs still it craves for space. Some of the renowned record shops, like the well known Virgin Megastore and the HMV unit, which is the second largest music store of Europe, offer tourists something never found anywhere. It also boosts of all the major department stores like Selfridges, with their exclusive discount offers to lure the tourists. In spite of the fact that it has easy access from bus as well as Tube station, still tourists prefer to stay in a hotel near Oxford Street.

Major tourists’ attractions are the lightings at the time of Christmas. The Oxford Street is decorated with colorful lights during the festival season with a formal “turning-on” ceremony in mid-to-late November. The lighting carnival continues till January 6 with its celebrity launches and promotional events.

In spite of the fact that the Oxford Street is a major tourist attraction of Europe, it’s not the costliest place in London. Located opposite to the Tottenham’s tube station is the sole pub of the Oxford Street called “The Tottenham” pub. Famous for its crowd on the weekends, the pub is one of the most crowded places on the street. It also boosts of cloth shops and is a heaven for computer gamers.
