Spa in Hotels: A Global Report

Spa is a term used for water treatment or balenotherapy. Actually it is people’s belief that, there are some curing elements in the minerals found in water from natural resources. Today’s concept of spa has changed a lot. It means warm bath, sauna complete with a massage. Spa treatment started in Czech Republic and France as testified by the archeological surveys of Bronze Age. People of prehistoric ages and to some extent middle ages have had their share of this type of amenities in their social life.

But the concept of spa gradually changed, after some men used these types of fountains of mineral water as a profitable business.  Back in mid 1880’s few people had bathtubs in their houses and they were to abide by the laws meant for it. As time evolved, we started finding these types of systems in some of the hotels, where one could use them after paying.

The first spa in hotel that was built was Gentlemen’s Pool House, Jefferson Pools, in Warm Springs, in Virginia. Built in 1761, President Jefferson bathed here. After the American Revolution these industries boomed suddenly. The first, very popular spa in hotel was Saratoga Springs, established in 1815. In 1821, and it became one of the greatest tourist attractions. There were some others who also led the business to great extent namely French Lick, Indiana; Hot Springs and White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia; Hot Springs, Arkansas; and Warm Springs, Georgia. But these were specialized in multiple types of treatments like cardiovascular, rheumatic and respiratory and various neurotic complications like Infantile Paralysis. Though they are age-old solutions for people’s comfort, but now days they are largely getting replaced by warm air bath, vapor bath and others.
